Nursery Notes: The Crib Mattress Hunt
Friday, August 13, 2010 at 12:42PM After an exhaustive search, we've finally settled on a crib mattress! *Insert happy dance here* The key issue in crib mattress safety is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the leading cause of death among infants under one year of age, claiming over 2000 lives per year. That's enough to scare any parent, right? So, to help prevent SIDS, buy a FIRM mattress that fits snugly in the crib. Also, be aware of the width of the mattress. Some mattresses are too deep to accommodate standard crib sheets. The sheet should fit snugly OVER the corners of the mattress and tuck beneath it, so it doesn't slide off and become a safety hazard.
Basically, there are two kinds of crib mattresses: coil and foam. Both have their pros and cons, of course, but in the end we chose to go the foam route for a couple of reasons. Not only are they more economical, but they're a lot lighter, which will make those middle-of-the-night sheet changes a whole lot easier on everyone.
According to the 8th edition of Baby Bargains, the Colgate Classica I Mattress got their top pick in the foam mattress department. Colgate also makes an organic version of the Classica I called the Colgate EcoClassica I, which is the one we decided to purchase. Not only does it pass all federal, state, and CPSC rules and requirements, and has extra-firm support, but is made of hypoallergenic foam from renewable plant materials (instead of the standard petroleum-based foam). And at a mere 8 pounds, it's lightweight and easy enough for me to handle during those middle-of-the-night sheet changes. We got ours from Amazon... gotta love that free shipping!
